Mattiussi Ecologia, created to innovate the future

Mattiussi Ecologia, created to innovate the future

The Mattiussi Ecologia experience, the brainchild of Valter Mattiussi, began in 1983 as a pioneering endeavour in the presorted waste collection industry, changing the design logic of presorting bins and integrated sorted-waste systems.

In just a few years, the Company has made a major contribution to the industry by establishing technical guidelines and standards, introducing important product and system innovations and consistently maintaining the design and manufacture of its products in Italy.

Manufacturing as a tool for experimentation and innovation.

Mattiussi Ecologia soon realised that innovation requires integrated process management. This is how the Mepla production site became part of the Mattiussi Ecologia group in 2003, working alongside Research & Development in a virtuous process to enhance technical quality, environmental sustainability and the sturdiness of construction.

Experimentation with new recycled materials entering the market at the time and know-how that Mepla had previously consolidated in the automotive sector were transformed into product innovations. An example of this is the reflector fitted on presorting bins to make them visible to collection vehicles during night hours and to house RFID devices for user recognition, which became a standard that was widely imitated on the market.

Eco-design: a recognised added value

INNOVATIVE BY CHOICE: 40 years of eco-design and environmental sustainability

INNOVATIVE BY CHOICE: 40 years of eco-design and environmental sustainability

“I chose a business that aligned with my conscience.
I couldn't have done differently.”
Valter Mattiussi

Thanks to Mattiussi Ecologia, the concept of “waste bins” is evolving towards studying professional and furnishing tools, developed in accordance with eco-design logic, that can engage and convince people.
As well as improving function, the focus on aesthetics also provides a new approach to reconsidering waste as a “resource” and no longer simply as “refuse”.

The Company’s vision is clear: to strive for environmental sustainability and a circular economy using solutions designed to fit harmoniously into the home and urban environment. This motivates residents to sort their waste and at the same makes work easier for operators.

Over the years, Mattiussi Ecologia’s eco-design has received prestigious awards and has sealed collaborations with external designers such as Decoma Design, Luisangelo Cozza and Alberto Ghirardello, the latter being one of the winners of the first Mattiussi Ecologia contest for young designers, in 2012.

Composter: THE REVOLUTION IN HOME COMPOSTING

Composter, a milestone in Mattiussi Ecologia’s development in the 1980s, introduced home composting to the Italian market. It transformed a niche hobby activity into a practice for recycling food and green waste, establishing itself both in name and in practice as the industry benchmark.

From the first rotomoulded Composter in 1989 to the ADI award in 2001 for Composter 660, eco-design has turned Mattiussi Ecologia models into revolutionary garden furniture elements, far removed from anachronistic conventional composters.

Food waste collection:
the widest range of food waste caddies currently available

Mattiussi Ecologia, aware of the fact that establishing any good practice requires the right tools, has over time developed the widest range of bins currently available on the market for the presorted collection of food waste, which accounts for almost one third of the waste produced daily in our homes.

1999 saw the introduction of Minimax, Italy’s first kerbside caddy for presorting waste, a concept that was still in its infancy at the end of the 1990s.

Mattiussi Ecologia realised the enormous potential of this type of collection, which at the time was carried out using makeshift means. Minimax, the widely imitated progenitor of a family of products that was to boost presorted waste collection in Italy, was developed with a series of design specificities that make it a trendsetter in the sector.

Mattiussi Ecologia has spurred on the evolution of waste presorting by offering a wide range of dedicated products created after listening carefully to the needs of both users and waste management companies. In terms of design and functionality, some are already market classics: Napo (2002), Polymax (2003), Comby (2006), Olimax (2012).

zerømax, evolution of the species

The latest generation and industry frontrunner, zerømax with its spherical base further extends the range and eliminates the need for a bag, thereby reducing micro-plastics and at the same time making cleaning easier.

Mattiussi Ecologia has always promoted the value of ergonomics in eco-design as a tangible focus on technology and structural strength to meet home and work requirements

A symbol of achieving full maturity in the field of design, in 2017 Easy Trolley was introduced, an innovative European patent that best expresses this concept: wheels and an extended “trolley” type handle; a grip handle for a balanced hold and front comb for mechanical emptying.

AT THE FOREFRONT IN DESIGNING INTEGRATED SYSTEMS

Biox: rethinking the city as a human ecosystem

The city perceived as an ecosystem in which Man interacts with his surroundings requires in-depth design skills and attention to decorum.
Structurally sturdy, aesthetically appealing and technologically cutting edge, the Biox line was developed in response to the need for environmental integration in areas where visual impact is high, such as historic city centres and squares.
The goal was to achieve personalised and user-pay waste collection with a lower impact that is more efficient and increasingly more sustainable.

Integration of systems

Mattiussi Ecologia is aware that there is no single ideal solution to presorted waste collection: every situation faces a multitude of different needs even in a common setting. The Company works alongside public and private waste management companies to study the implementation of the functional and technological solutions best suited to each individual setting.

This attention is reflected, for example, in the Iglus line of waste collection banks (2003), which evolved from an aesthetic enhancement of the early nineties versions, and now has been redeveloped and fitted with volumetric sensors to optimise collection routes.

The timely study of new or existing solutions also paves the way for the development of easily fitted Smart MGB access control systems for introducing PAYT charging.
